There
are many decisions to be made when it comes to your
web site.Is this an Internet (public) web site, Extranet,
or Intranet? This will usually dictate what you can
do on a site. Next, color schemes, page layouts (will
there be more than one), content types, and many more
questions need to be asked and answered. Gathering
all of the requirements and limitations before starting
a web site implementation is important to its success.
For example, an Intranet
site is a site that is within the physical confines
of your organization's computer network. Usually an
organization will standardize on the type of browser
(such as Internet Explorer or Firefox). While this
puts limits on the internal users it also allows the
site to be developed utilizing all of the features
of that browser. Creating a site that works great in
Internet Explorer but the entire organization uses
Safari on Apple computers may not work properly.
When designing for a public site, a developer
must consider all of the different browsers to create
a site that will work properly in all environments.
Failure to do so may impact visitor satisfaction. Additionally,
an Extranet is a secure site whose content is protected
but available over the public Internet.
